Nancy Valencia, candidate for LBUSD School Board, engaged school parents and community leaders in Avalon to discuss their aspirations for Avalon K-12 School.
Nancy visited Avalon in Santa Catalina on October 22, 2019 and again on January 29, 2020 to meet with parents, teachers, school administrators, and business and community leaders to hear about their concerns and hopes for Avalon K-12 school, the only public school located on Santa Catalina Island serving 4,000 residents. About 550 students attend the school, which is part of the Long Beach Unified School District.
Under the watchful eye of Alejandra Barriga, an Avalon K-12 school parent, Nancy listened to stakeholders describe their aspirations for the school. Talking about her visits, Nancy said:
“I am grateful to Mayor Anni Marshall and Alejandra Barriga for arranging the insightful discussions with Avalon K-12 school stakeholders. The conversations reinforced the fact that there is still more we can do to ensure equitable opportunities for LBUSD students from a wide variety of backgrounds, including over 500 students who attend Avalon K-12 school.”
