Avalon, CA, February 1, 2020 Nancy Valencia, candidate for Long Beach School Board, was endorsed by Ann H. “Anni” Marshall, Mayor of Avalon, Santa Catalina Island, California.

Mayor Marshall, in announcing her endorsement, issued the following statement:

I am very impressed with Nancy’s boots-on-the-ground leadership and I believe she will advocate successfully for Avalon K-12 school as a member of the LBUSD school board. I am confident that she will help make sure that all students in LUBSD have equitable opportunities to achieve their dreams.”

Nancy visited Avalon in Santa Catalina on October 22, 2019 and again on January 29, 2020 to meet with parents, teachers, school administrators, and business and community leaders to hear about their concerns and hopes for Avalon K-12 school, the only public school located on Santa Catalina Island serving 4,000 residents. Over 500 students attend the school, which is part of the Long Beach Unified School District.

Under the watchful eye of Alejandra Barriga, an Avalon K-12 school parent, Nancy listened to stakeholders describe their aspirations for the school. Nancy released the following statement about her visits:

“I am grateful to Mayor Anni Marshall and Alejandra Barriga for arranging the insightful discussions with Avalon K-12 school stakeholders. The conversations reinforced the fact that there is still more we can do to ensure equitable opportunities for LBUSD students from a wide variety of backgrounds, including over 500 students who attend Avalon K-12 school.”

Mayor Marshall joined LBUSD Board Member Dr. Juan Benitez and the Honorable Betty Karnette, retired California State Senator, among others, in endorsing Nancy Valencia for School Board in the March 3, 2020 election.
